Day 02 & 03: AKANIN NY NOFY

Akanin’ny Nofy is located on about fifty hectares, on the edge of one of the many lakes that form the Pangalanes. The lake on which lies the “Dream Nest” is named Ampitabe, it is 60 km south of Tamatave. It is separated from the Indian Ocean by a thin line of coastal dunes, sometimes only a few meters.
The main attraction of the place is the visit of the “Palmarium”, located on a peninsula of more than 30 hectares on Ampitabe. It is a private reserve composed of nearly 100,000 palm trees specific to Madagascar. Species that attract many people are the rarest species such as Dypsis, Ravenea, Orania, but also Voanioala and Lemurophoenix.
At the Palmarium there are ten species of lemurs among the rarest Indri Indri, the largest lemur on the planet; Varecia variegata; the Sifaka or Sifaka, a species that loves to stand vertically; the highly threatened Aye Aye, the micro lemurs and the lemur coronatus specific to the north of the island.
This very singular reserve is a real natural shelter for Malagasy fauna and flora with its extraordinary plant species composed of orchids, carnivorous plants, especially the nepenthes, the traveler’s tree or ravinala, etc.
The most common way to get to Akanin’ny Nofy is by boat, either by taking one of the barges that criss-cross the Pangalanes Canal or by renting a motorized canoe. The most common departure is from the small seaside town of Manambato. A visit to the “Nest of Dreams” makes it possible to make a small descent of the Canal of the Pangalanes, a canal whose construction dates from the time of Gallieni, the first governor of Madagascar in 1896.

Maki Canyon and Natural Pool
The National Park of Isalo, it is an area of 81,540 ha which is made up of sandstone. Over the centuries, sandstone has been sculpted by rain and erosion. Stone deserts, natural pools, breathtaking canyons and caves make up the bulk of this by offering an exceptional show. The Isalo National Park contains some species of birds and reptiles.
Transfer for Ranohira Bass.
After a short walk at the foot of the immense cliffs have remained some forest relics that are home to some lemurs including the lemur catta, recognizable by its long tail adorned with white and black rings, and the all-white sifaka, indefatigable jumper. With luck and silence, it is possible to surprise them at the bend of the path between the trees and the boulders. The canyons open their doors and reveal their splendors to the curious who dare to venture into their bowels. The huge walls crush by their size and reveal real treasures hidden in an unusual setting.
Return to the sun, and climb to the crests of Isalo where you can enjoy a superb panorama to the north. Once these fantastic walls are crossed, the originality of the forms due to a thousand-year-old erosion opens its heart. Throughout the circuit, amazement succeeds surprises, so forms, colors and vegetation have developed exceptional landscapes!
